Gratitude permits childhood

Approaching matter as a vibrant agent, it addresses the role of materiality and its cycles in processes of social underrepresentation, biological decay, circulation, and the politics of care and intimacy. Plants, inanimate objects, images, affect, architectural elements and energies are all seen as part of the same organic whole, where an isomorphism is created between socio political forces and material ecologies. In approaching physical manipulation as a conceptual tool, intimate narratives and material cycles are woven together.
Through processes such as vaporization, digital image alteration, compression, fragmentation and absorption, alteration as a form of abstraction becomes a way of thinking through collective and individual narratives. Camouflaged installations and the concealment of histories behind the works become ways of reflecting on the power strategies of the politics of visibility. Crucially, these hidden narratives which are initially inaccessible to the viewer, are slowly unfolded through subtle interventions.
The work compromises sculpture and site-specific interventions, co-existing with other media, such as digital image alterations, text/poem, and performance and is often conceived through collaborations with individuals or organizations involved in activities of ‘work care’ and treatment.
During the residency period Luca Vanello continued his ongoing exploration of the potential political agency of non-human entities in the activities defining “labour of care” and therapy treatments. It is born from of the collaboration he has set up with Dr. Sharif El-Leithy, head of the centre for Traumatic Stress Service of the Springfield University Hospital, London. The centre is specialized in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) for asylum seekers.

Luca Vanello (b.1986, Trieste, Italy) graduated from the Universität der Künste Berlin with Professor Gregor Schneider and with an MFA from the Slade School of Fine Arts, London. He has had residencies at Banff Centre for the Arts (Canada, upcoming), Rupert (Vilnius), Fondazione Ratti (Como), OUTPOST (Norwich), Lottozero (Prato). He is based in Berlin.
