SCREAM: FIRST VOICE
An original performance in progress
The project SCREAM: FIRST VOICE problematises the issue of child sexual abuse, bringing it to the forefront of social discourse through performance as an artistic gesture. It seeks to break the silence and demystify the treatment of victims of sexual violence. Statistics show that on average, one in five people has experienced at least some form of sexual harassment, most of which occurs in the family environment or at the hands of people we trust. Legal protection for individuals is still minimal, and the public dialogue on sexual violence is also pushed into the background. The performance therefore takes an exploratory approach to the subject, questioning civilisational and ethical patterns and seeking to destigmatise victims of sexual abuse. It encourages reflection on neglected topics and introduces them into public discourse.
The event consists of two parts; a performance that explores issues of abuse through theatre form, and a conversation with experts that responds to the issues raised. The project is structured as a living organism that will continue to evolve, providing both the audience and the creators with a platform for an open dialogue on taboo subjects.
Authors of the performance: Jure Žavbi, Lara Wolf, Katja Markič, Urša Majcen, Actors: Jure Žavbi, Lara Wolf, Dramaturgs: Katja Markič, Urša Majcen, Lighting designer: Domen Lušin, Sound designers: Mary Anne Blanche, Aljoša Živadinov Zupančič, Costume designer: Nika Dolgan, Photographers: Ana Šink Krenner, Željko Stevanić, Graphic designer: Oskar Miketič, Production of the performance: KUD Transformator, Co-production of the performance: Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television, Conversation with the audience moderated by: Združenje za MOČ

A collective of young theatre artists is exploring the transformative potential of theatre in society. They are interested in the themes of social inequality, discrimination, gender-based violence, the exploitation of positions of power, the psychological safety of the individual and civilisational attitudes towards taboo subjects. They use art to fight violence and break down prejudices, to publicly raise vulnerable issues and to critically approach the socio-political system of victim treatment in the legal and social spheres.
The collective currently consists of an actor and an actress, two dramaturgs and a lighting designer, and aims to work democratically and non-hierarchically within the creative process, since they believe in equal communication, collective creativity and equal authorship of each member of the creative process. Although their primary language is theatre, they also intend to extend their scope of activity into the space of performance, filmography and video installations, online media, etc., in order to experiment with the different forms through which art can intervene in the public space.
They see their audience as equal partners in bringing about change in society, as a collective they want to create a platform for dialogue and education on silenced issues, but they also see their work as a never-ending struggle, so they would welcome any response that would help them to further their research or draw their attention to socially overlooked areas of discrimination.
KRIK - theatre research
The author's project KRIK (eng. scream) addresses the issue of child sexual abuse, bringing it to the forefront of social discourse through performance as an artistic gesture. It seeks to break the silence and detaboo the treatment of victims of sexual violence. The team understands art as a field of transformative potential for society and through the project aims to create a platform for more active solutions to acute problems. The performance KRIK is a theatrical research created to question civilisational and ethical patterns. The performative code of the show, through diverse performative approaches, searches for an appropriate theatrical language as an expression for the topic at focus. On the level of acting and directing, we question the boundaries between dramatic theatre and performance, between fiction and documentary, and reflect our own process of research. An important part of the process is the diaries or audio reflections of the artists, which are created during the rehearsals and thus record the development of our relationship to the collected material. During the research period, we also met with several experts in the field of psychological and legal support for victims, as well as in the fields of sexology and child psychology.
We explore issues of abuse through the theatrical form, but we also want to offer the audience an expert perspective on the topic of child sexual abuse, so we are inviting experts from the association "Združenje za MOČ" to the performance event itself to lead a post-performance discussion with the audience. Such a conversation, which responds to the issues at stake, provides both the audience and the creators with a platform for open dialogue on taboo topics. Only through the active intervention of art in society will we be able to overcome the taboos of civilisation and, through general education and breaking the silence, prevent further abuses from happening.
